Lawrenceville House

158 45th Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Three-story infill townhouse in historic Lawrenceville neighborhood. The site was maximized by building wide and tall. Street facade is deliberately vernacular but not historically rigorous. Brick and metal siding were selected as durable, contextual materials. Window opening are large and not over-scale. Appropriate. Interior spaces are generous and furnished with locally sourced ash and re-claimed American chestnut. The crafted open stair connects all levels of the home and directs natural light far within, ensuring ample daylight throughout. Calming and uplifting. Bedrooms are private refuges with translucent glass lite doors and en-suite bathrooms. The third level is an open area providing additional sleeping space or living/ entertaining area. Defined by the roof overhang and wood railing screen, the tile roof terrace is an open outpost. From here the dense urban site unfolds with views of the neighborhood, the Allegheny River Valley, downtown Pittsburgh and at night quite a few stars. Private and expansive. Mannered and brutalistic.

Project was developed and contracted with our in-house business entity 43 1/2 Street Development, LLC.
