The third floor in the house was always an occupied space with window on either end in the gables. During the interior demolition the potential for the upper floor was apparent with the uncovering of the original rough sawn framing. While the stair up is quite wide, it was a bit awkward and required a hunched maneuver at the top. A generous shed-dormer was added at the stair landing to stand up fully and move into the main spaces. Rafter cross-ties and knee-wall bracing remain exposed while three 4’x4’ operable skylights were added, flooding the rooms with daylight, boosting natural ventilation and providing views down the Monongahela River valley.
